Aus Sololib-L, zu einem Times (London)-Artikel vom 19.10.02: Surgeons in Melbourne had a problem with a critically ill patient who had suffered blast injuries. One of the surgeons remembered having read an article about the treatment of just such injuries, but local resources could not track it down. A call was put through to the British Library at Boston Spa in Yorkshire, where it was 3 o’clock in the morning! The 24-hour service paid dividends, and the article was scanned and emailed to the surgeons within 20 minutes of the call being received.
Two things delight me about this story. One, that librarians were able to help save a life. Two, that the Times printed the story in a prominent place in the paper, alongside the horror stories relating to the Bali bomb.
Remember, folks, libraries *ARE* newsworthy!
